The Neo-Expressionist Júlio Pomar was born in Lisbon in 1926 and has remained closely associated with the city throughout his career. His work explores art's potential as a form of social protest, an interest that dates back to the 1940s and 1950s, when the artist was a member of the Democratic Unity Movement, for which he was arrested and imprisoned by the PIDE.
Pomar established the Júlio Pomar Foundation in 2004, and the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar was set up in 2013, in an former warehouse in the heart of Lisbon. The original intention had been that the space would become Pomar's studio, and only later a museum; however, Pomar himself ultimately decided to continue working in the studio space immediately adjoining the gallery building, which currently displays several hundred works by Pomar, including drawing, printmaking, ceramics, collages and assemblage, as well as documentary and archive material relating to Pomar's practice, career and current and former studios.
