Mikhail Matiushin’s House (St Petersburg Avant-Garde Museum)
The former home of Mikhail Matiushin (1861–1934), a leading member of the Russian avant-garde.
Mikhail Matiushin (also spelled 'Matyushin') was a member of the Russian Futurists and a lifelong experimenter who was particularly drawn to scientific theories of human perception. This wooden house was built in the middle of the nineteenth century and, from 1904, was operating as an artists' hotel. Matiushin lived in a flat here with his wife, artist and writer Elena Guro (1877–1913), from 1912 until his death in 1934. Throughout that time, it was a cultural centre and the couple received frequent visits from major figures on the Russian cultural landscape, including the painters Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) and Pavel Filonov (1883-1941) and the poets Alexey Kruchenykh and Velimir Khlebnikov.
Today Matiushin's house displays Matiushin family memorabilia, paintings and drawings by Mikhail Matiushin and Elena Guro, as well as archival materials connected with the history and the evolution of the avant-garde movement in Russia.
